IELTS is of two types

IELTS Academic : This is for study purposes (Study visa IELTS exam is necessary)

IELTS is divided into four modules Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The complete test duration is 2 hours and 45 minutes. Listening: The total length of this section is 30 minutes and it is divided into four parts candidates have to answer different types of 40 questions.

Listening and speaking test is same for both Academic and General Training. Whereas, reading and Writing section is of different pattern. Listening, Reading and Writing section of both Academic and GT are completed on the same day without any break in between them. However, speaking section can be held up to one week before or after the written test. Total test time for both General and Academic training is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Listening Test Format:

Listening section is again divided into four sections. Each section has one recording.

Recording 1: This recording is usually a conversation between two people on general social context.

Recording 2: This recording is generally a speech about local facilities.

Recording 3: This recording is normally a conversation between up to four people on an educational or training context.

Recording 4: This recording is commonly a monologue on an academic subject like a University lecture.

Each section is having 10 questions. Questions are arranged in a manner so that the answers appear in the order they are heard in the recording. Candidate can hear recordings only once. Total time allowed for this section is approximately 30 minutes plus 10 extra for transferring answers to the answer sheet. The total number of questions is 40. Each question is worth 1 mark. If we talk about types of questions:  it can be multiple-choice, matching, Plan/diagram/map, flowchart, filling the blanks. During Listening, candidates have to write their answers on the question paper and at the end of all four recordings, the candidate will be given 10 minutes to transfer answers to the answer sheet.

Speaking Test Format:

The speaking section is used to check a candidate’s English speaking ability. This is same for both Academic and General Training candidates. In speaking teat, there will be the man to man interaction. Examiner will ask some questions from candidates. Examiner will ask some general questions; ask an opinion about a particular topic. The whole speaking test will be recorded. This speaking test is again divided into three sections. Speaking Test Part 1:

This will be about general introduction. First of all examiner will introduce himself. Then ask candidates to introduce themselves. Examiner will ask general questions about candidate like education, work, family and home. This part takes four to five minutes.

Speaking Test Part 2:

In this part of speaking section, candidate will be given a cue card to ask to talk about a topic mentioned in card. Candidate will be given one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. Then examiner will ask one or two question from candidate on the same topic.

Speaking Test Part 3:

In this part of speaking section, examiner will cross question on the topic given in speaking test part 2. Here candidate has opportunity to discuss more ideas and issues on that topic. This part lasts four to five minutes.

Academic Reading Test Format:

The Reading test section assesses the reading ability of candidate. Candidate will be 60 minutes to complete this section. This section consists of 40 questions. These questions are designed to test a wide range of reading abilities like reading for details, skimming, recognising writer’s opinion, understanding logical arguments.

For academic reading section there will be three reading passages with variety of questions. These questions can be of multiple-choice, matching features, matching headings, sentence completion, table completion, diagram label and flowchart completion. These passages can be taken from books, magazines, journals and newspapers.

In Academic Reading test papers are designed to be more appropriate for those who are pursuing postsecondary degrees. This is for under graduate, graduate and post graduate students. 

Candidate need to answer 40 questions in 60 minutes. Unlike listening test, there will be no extra time given to candidates to transfer answers to the answer sheet. General Training Reading Test Format:

For General Training Reading Test, time allowed, number of questions and number of sections are same as Academic Reading Test section. Difference is in the type of content given. Unlike Academic Reading Test, content here is designed more appropriate for workplace. This test is most often used for the assessment of skilled workers. This test is always taken for non-academic purposes.

Academic Writing Test Format:

The Academic writing test section assesses the writing ability of candidates. Candidate will be 60 minutes to complete this section. This section is again divided in to two parts.

Academic Writing Test Part 1:

In the first part of Academic Writing test, candidate will be presented with table, graph, chart or diagram. Then, candidate will be asked to summarise, describe or explain the information in his own words. Candidate may be asked to describe the stages of process or describe an object or event.

Academic Writing Test Part 2:

In second part of Academic Writing Test, candidate will be asked to write an essay in his/her own words.

General Training Writing Test Format:

The General writing test section is again for assessing the writing ability of candidates. Candidate will be 60 minutes to complete this section. This section is again divided in to two parts.

General Training Writing Test Part 1:

Here in the first part of this writing section, candidate will be presented with a situation and asked to write a letter for explaining the situation or to request information. This letter may be in formal, semi-formal or personal style.

General Training Writing Test Part 2:

Here in the second part of this writing section, candidate will be asked to write an essay in his/her own words, arguments and with personal example. This essay can be personal in style.

Candidate need to complete both tasks in 60 minutes.
